Graphic designer in Brussels specialising in visual identity, editorial design and photography
A graphic designer’s practice grounded in structure
My work as a graphic designer is rooted in typography.
Beyond the choice of typefaces, this discipline has taught me to approach every project as a structured system where hierarchy, rhythm and readability contribute to the construction of meaning.
Whether it is a visual identity, an editorial publication, an annual report, a brochure or any communication material, I am primarily interested in how information is organised and how its different elements interact.
This approach leads me to develop coherent visual systems capable of evolving across different media while maintaining a strong and consistent identity.
Between rigour and sensitivity
Trained in graphic design at ENSAV La Cambre, I have developed my practice across both cultural and institutional contexts.
Over the course of my career, I have collaborated with various Belgian cultural organisations such as Court-Circuit and La Bellone, as well as with artists, associations and institutions requiring communication systems adapted to diverse contexts.
After several years of freelance practice, I joined the Brussels law firm DALDEWOLF as Visual Designer, where I spent five years developing and shaping the firm’s visual communication across print, digital and institutional media.
At the firm, I designed and deployed visual identities as well as a wide range of communication materials, including publications, events, newsletters, presentations, digital campaigns and social media content.
Working across these different contexts has reinforced my belief that good design emerges from the balance between constraints, coherence and visual expression.
I see design as a tool for clarifying, structuring and enhancing a message rather than as a purely aesthetic intervention.
Photographic practice
Photography plays an important role in my personal work.
Through concert photography and portrait work of musicians, I aim to capture moments of presence, intensity and authenticity.
Developed over several years within concert venues, festivals, artistic environments and cultural institutions, this practice is a natural extension of my graphic design work.
In return, it enriches my design approach through a constant attention to framing, rhythm, composition and the relationship between image and narrative.
This photographic work currently feeds a long-term book and exhibition project dedicated to the musicians I have encountered over the years, extending a reflection on presence, identity and the representation of artists.
Collaboration
As a graphic designer, editorial designer and photographer based in Brussels, I collaborate with institutions, companies, cultural organisations and artists on visual identities, editorial publications and communication projects in Belgium and internationally.
My areas of expertise include visual identity, editorial design, layout design, institutional communication, art direction and photography.
Whether working in a corporate, institutional or cultural context, I seek projects where design helps clarify communication, organise information and strengthen visual identity.
Available for freelance assignments, creative collaborations or a new professional opportunity.
I highly recommend Hugues de Castillo as a Graphic Designer. Hugues worked for many years with our firm (DALDEWOLF), having held this position on a full-time basis. In this role, he was able to apply his graphic design skills to the development of our brand, culture and objectives. He set up graphic supports and visuals for our legal services and promotional missions, in line with our marketing strategy. He created graphic elements (visuals, flyers, reports, PowerPoint, etc.) using visual creation tools, and was responsible for the design and layout of these various media. Hugues has made a decisive contribution to promoting our firm, its image and its services. His main professional qualities? Discernment, precision and taste. Not to mention a solid musical culture.
