Concert Photography in Belgium and Europe
Context
Concert photography has played an important role in the photographic practice developed by Hugues de Castillo since 2019.
This body of work began with the acquisition of a Sony Alpha 7 III full-frame mirrorless camera system and gradually expanded through regular collaborations with concert venues, festivals, artists and cultural organisations across Belgium and Europe.
These include institutions and events such as Le Botanique, Ancienne Belgique, Magasin 4 Desertfest Antwerp, Obsidian Dust and Roadburn, among others.
Photographic Approach
This photographic practice favours black and white imagery in order to focus on what matters most: light, movement, expression and stage presence.
Beyond the musical performance itself, the aim is to capture those moments when emotion becomes visible, when a face, a gesture or a gaze tells as much of the story as the music.
This perspective also extends to a series of portraits of musicians and bands produced alongside live performances.
Subject
This selection brings together photographs taken in a wide range of concert settings, from intimate venues to international festivals.
Each image seeks to convey the intensity of live performance while highlighting the deeply human dimension of the musical experience.
Objective
To build a sensitive archive of the contemporary music scene while developing a photographic practice centred on presence, emotion and the identity of artists.
